Darren John

Darren John is an artist i came across on Instagram, his more recent work consists of a monochrome approach. I felt inspired by his innovative print work. In his work he uses recycled materials like packaging, cardboard and string as well as house hold items to create various prints.  he also uses tape resist to create complex outcomes.

Shigeru Ban

Shigeru Ban is an architect who is not very interested in the modern materials rather he is interested in reusing existing materials that expand the concept behind his building. His innovative use of materials such as paper recycled materials makes him a very well-known architect. Due to the use of similar materials his work is often very recognisable.

The consistent use of these natural materials to create outcomes, result in new innovative facades despite the use of like materials. The repetitive use of cardboard rolls has an aesthetic outcome is one which I enjoy and will consider working with.

The Dursley Treehouse

'Grand Design The Dursley Treehouse'

This specific tree house episode inspired me as the owners of the house had to work around land that was surrounded by listed tress. They built this house amongst the trees without cutting or disturbing them. The owners had to follow several precaution on tree protection before they could build such a house, in order to not disrupt the nature as well as the wildlife that live there.

The tree house is not a typical tree house, however it was called this as it was so closely compacted with trees allowing them to be just meters apart that it took on it own name. Another element i found fascinating was the use of a mirrored base helping the lower half camouflage into the surrounding.

Impressions of Nature

I found a copy of this book which explores the idea of nature printing and its history, the book is compiled with numerous ways that this technique has been used and how it came about.

The technique of using nature to produce prints began back in the middle ages, it was often used to record medical plants but later on developed into a scientific process to record flora and fauna. It was not until the 19th century when photographic technology emerged that this technique was no longer needed

Church of light

‘Ando’s architecture is architecture of walls’ this is most apparent in his church of light building. The wall at the far end of the church is constructed of four sections to create a cross, this allows light to enter into the church through these constructed panels. Light was the main theme of this building however the contrast of darkness was also a major theme, as light can only be seen in darkness.

After looking at Tado Ando's use of light i hope to look at geometric objects and structures and the way they intertwine with natural light and the shadows that they create

What is the garden used for:

  • Growing plants
  • Growing various vegetables
  • Playing/entertainment
  • Gatherings
  • Relaxing
  • Storage (shed)

George Clarkes amazing space's

One episode of 'Amazing spaces' showcased the construction of the famous 'Woodmans Tree house' this tree house combined the idea of Luxury and nature, as it consisted of a sauna and a hot tub.

However it was the exterior facades that really captured by attention. The rawness of the natural wooden exterior complimented its surroundings. I really liked the way the materials were manipulated to create different texture to construct walls. Several layers of stacked wood constructs the front facade in combination with the hay like texture on the side.

This programme is one of my favourites and was the main source of inspiration for this project. This show inspired me as i felt that it explores how a space can  be completely transformed whether it be a house or a shed the space can have a new purpose and function in an entirely new way. i find fascinating the way the show works with compact-ability and transforming small spaces to spaces that can be shared.
